As we know, bukkit may or may not be updated anytime soon and spigot is waiting on bukkit to update, so we do not really know when we will be able to play 1.8. I do not know about the rest of you, but I was looking forward to seeing a world border expansion, and would still like to see one. I propose that the world border be expanded now, instead of waiting for 1.8. While there are still some open spaces, there are also biomes that are not currently with in our reach (mesa for sure, but there are also no cold (snowy) biomes either). The new stones (diorite, androdite, etc) are craftable with the materials we already have, and the the water temples will be spawned in old chunks as well as new. So we would not be missing anything by expanding our world border’s now.
TL;DR - Let’s expand our world border’s, we won’t be missing anything.

The new types of rocks are craftable with nether quartz, there is no way I’m spendind stacks of quartz into those stones. They will be available in huge quantities once we expand the map with the update.
