Spawn Renewal Project: Closing Stages

Apologies for the delays everyone, but this has been a topic of much discussion on and off the forum, but now we’ve finally come to an agreement which will be good for everyone and the server as a whole!

The Farm district will go in the Western Grass area (Area #1 for those who have been following the discussions), we’ll follow the design proposed by Aljady, adapted for the new terrain.

The embassy district is for now still on hold, we’ll have proper discussions about that later on since it’s a low priority at this point.

However, none of this will be allowed to go further until we, once for all, fill in all the strip mines littering the underground of spawn. They take a massive toll on people’s computers, and are the main source for the drastic FPS drops near spawn. Therefore, no builds will be allowed until we fix the strip mines by filling them in with dirt, cobble, etc (no sand or gravel please).

There is a massive amount of strip mines below spawn, and they must all be taken care of. This will require some time but if everyone pitches in we can get this done fast and have everything at spawn done by the time Spigot is table and we roll out 1.8.

If you wish to help, you can do so by donating dirt to the community chests in the storage building, or by going down to the strip mines and fill them out. There are various access points, but the best place is through the Ravine right next to the storage and spawn buildings. If you go to the eastern end there is a cobble shack, from there you can access the strip mines.

When filling in strip mines, please:

  • Start out by filling out dead ends, we want to avoid blocking off access to other strip mines that eventually get missed. So start with dead ends, or close off loops that lead to the same place.

  • Dont bother with anything above y = 20 for now, and stay between x490,z254, and x90, z-146. Check the map and try to stay within this square: i.imgur.com/M9bA6Oa.png

  • Leave natural caves and ravines alone. Our focus for now is on the strip mines.

  • If you run into any player bases, please contact a mod to make sure it’s abandoned. If the base is abandoned you get to keep the contents of the base as a reward for your help (how much of the treasure you keep is subject to consideration of the mod)

  • If you find any unlocked chests, you get to claim the contents, same goes with furnaces.

The faster we do this, and the more people help out, the sooner we can get back to improving our spawn!

Also, if you see stairs or half slabs, please remove em and replace them with a solid block, thank you!

For those of you helping out, the ravine entrances are blocked off. The best way to access the mines is now through the troll market. When you enter via the spawn staircase, go right and you should see a tunnel.

I noticed that you said to use cobble for filling the holes in. Wouldn’t that also cause an FPS lag because it has to load those amongst the stone and dirt? I thought we would use naturally generated blocks.

The game engine doesn’t care what kind of block something is if it’s completely surrounded by opaque blocks. You could make pixel art with your landfill and it wouldn’t matter. Besides, cobble’s naturally generated too you know (lava), and anybody not building with stone bricks has tons of it so it’s good for landfills.
