I think it’s just getting old. I use a Dell Latitude E6400 to play MC. It’s got 4gb of ram and running Linux mint.

I run optifine, it works ok, i get about 17 fps on average. Past two weeks though, after 10 mins it drops to 1fps. And slows down my whole system for several minutes after I close the game.

I can run other games no issue, like Battle for Wesnoth or some emulators (SNES,PS1), no lag whatsoever.

It sounds like a memory leak to me if it’s coming on gradually. Try a different distro? If you want lightweight definitely check out XFCE Linux.
