Changes to chat rules [UPDATED]

#1

Hey folks, I am making some changes to the rules - specifically regarding chat.

Controversial topics

Controversial topics are now against the rules. Notable examples are religion and abortion. Any topics that create drama or hateful speech is not allowed.

Spam

Spamming has always been against our rules, however we are broadening the rule. The chat should never be filled with memes, caps lock, or the same message over and over.

Vulgar and Inappropriate chat

Swearing is allowed, within reason. However other vulgar, inappropriate, and otherwise indecent chat is NOT allowed.

We will be issuing temporary mutes to those who break these rules.

Thank you for understanding!

After a bit of talking with Agent about what everyone can do and what mods should do, I now need some clarifications.

This is an important topic, I understood it today. Everybody should read Agent’s rule update and think about it.

Everyone can react/answer. Players, you have some questions for you at the end

-The chat should never be filled with memes, caps lock, or the same message over and over.

Ok, so:
On caps lock:
*Can mods do caps announcements?

On memes:
*Should a player saying “Kappa” be muted/kicked/banned?
*Should a player saying “That’s what she said” be muted/kicked/banned?
*Basically, what do you describe as “meme” ? We created our OWN memes with “Jokje” for example.

On spamming:
*What do you describe as spamming?
*Is a player posting a message each 2-3 minutes saying he is selling something spamming? Should he be muted/kicked/banned?

No vulgar or inappropriate chat is allowed at all from now on. The exception to this rule is swearing - It is still allowed, within reason.

*What do you describe as inappropriate? Make it clear, because an example follows:
-Bby built a giant penis in my base. I asked her to tear it down, and while she was doing it, we were having fun saying very “innuendo”-like comments (“Take it all the way down”, “You have a long shaft”, etc…).
-Nobody got offended
-It was only fun
-It lasted for 2-3 minutes.
=> Is it forbidden?

-By extension, are any inappropriate jokes banned? Because jokes have a tendency to be inappropriate, that’s the point.

*To what point is swearing allowed?
-What is the tipping point where it becomes “inappropriate” ?

*Have players and mods the same set of rules? A discussion with Agent proved that they don’t.
Can mods even make a joke, laugh, interact?
-Are they allowed to swear?
-Are they allowed to make bad/trash jokes?

More questions!

-Is Mumble totally exempt of all those rules? What’s the point if so?
-Isn’t the point of the rules to have a good community?
-Aren’t you afraid this will create, if the rules continue in this path, a stale chat where mods monitor what is said?

To everyone:
-Don’t you think we already have a mature and intelligent chat that doesn’t need strict rules like these (except maybe for the “Controversial topics”) ?
-Would you feel “Ok” with being warned/muted/kicked if you made a trashy joke, or used a meme, or spammed for fun ? Would that affect your feelings towards the freedom we have on the chat server right now?

Finally:
-Would it be fun if I could not be inappropriate anymore because i’m a mod?
-Would you prefer colder/more distant mods?

Regarding Spam:

 1. Mods should be able to do caps announcements. They sometimes may have important server information to relay to players, that may not get seen if chat is crowded, say when there are a lot of players online. Caps announcements would be useful in this situation to help the mods’ important message get seen.

 2. I’m not sure how memes are spammy at all. I don’t see how people saying ‘that’s what she said’ or quoting memes is bad, as long as it’s not excessive, like that’s all they say.

 3. Spamming would be repeating the same message, or meaningless messages over and over to where it interferes with other players’ discussions.

 4. I think a player should be allowed to advertise what they’re selling within reason. If it is obvious no one online is interested, they should chill out and wait for other players to come online.

Regarding inappropriate language:

 1. I think “dirty” phrases and innuendos like those examples should be allowed to a point. If it is in good taste and isn’t just random. Joking around with your friends on this server about ‘inappropriate’ things should be allowed. We are, for the most part, mature adults on this server and should be able to handle mature topics without getting censored.

On the other hand, there is a point where it gets excessive or distasteful. Joking about rape may be crossing the line for most people. If a player who the jokes are directed to is obviously getting bothered by the comments, they should stop.

 1. Occasional swearing should be allowed. Again, I think we are all mature enough to handle someone saying ‘fuck’ or ‘shit’ once in a while.

However, if someone is swearing excessively, as in every other word in each sentence, they should be asked to stop.

 1. Of course mods should be able to abide by these rules! Just because someone became a mod doesn’t mean they are stripped of ever being able to have fun or joke around with people on the server! Our mods are some of the nicest, coolest people on here-that’s why they’re mods! It’d be a real shame if they had to become robot just because they got promoted.

More Answers!:

 1. The same rules should be applied to Mumble. It is a branch-off of the server that simply allows players to communicate easier.

 2. Rules are meant to protect the community and players from trolls or annoying players, however, they should not hinder discussion or stop us from joking around with one another.

 3. Yes, if the rules become too excessive or harsh, chat would probably become very dull.

 4. Yes.

 5. I believe if it becomes excessive or a problem, you should be warned, and then muted if you don’t comply. Otherwise the rules are pointless. I like the server the way it is, I don’t think chat is a major issue at the moment.

 6. No! Just because you’re a mod does not mean you shouldn’t be able to have the same discussion as the rest of the players!

 7. Aw hell no! I like chatting with mods, not because they’re mods, but because they’re cool people! It’d be a shame if I could talk to/joke around with them like I do with regular players! :frowning:

In light of the recent minor storm, I’m just going to put this here.
Preface: I like DClem. Good guy, friendly and helpful.
-However-
Agent told him about the rules update he was about to make, in particular that Agent wanted mods to uphold a clean language standard. Basically, Agent said “no dick jokes” and DClem made a dick joke. In public chat. Not good.

Now, that isn’t really a bannable offense, but it set a fire. Agent, DClem, and Jugglingman argued about the situation for several minutes before I joined the chat, but the argument kept up for over an hour. Neither party really got what the other was trying to say, it seems, because it ended with DClem losing mod status and being briefly banned.

The moral of the story isn’t “don’t make dick jokes”, it’s that Agent and Jugglingman own this server and rules are rules. Discussion is fine, that’s the point of this thread, but to be told not to do something, and then to do it anyway, is just bad.

I just want this whole situation to be in the past. I’m not saying that you have to do something just because an admin or a mod tells you to, but if it’s a reasonable request like "don’t say blah "…

That aside, Agent has already stated that the new rules will be revised, taking into consideration what’s been brought up.

Glad I could help you rethinking those rules

Ok, so:
On caps lock:
-Yes, mods should be allowed to make caps announcments.
-Players should be allowed to use caps, but not major caps spam (like the “GLORY TO THE TAIGA!” joke should be allowed to be said in caps)

On memes:
-If a player says “Kappa” they should be muted for 10 minutes.
-Same as kappa, a mute for 10 minutes
-Overused/popular internet jokes is what I define as meme. Jokes that people have made on arcane that are actually funny (“Jokje” and “GLORY TO THE TAIGA” for example) should be allowed in the chat.

On spamming:
-Overused caps in a sentence, typing random letters, long posts in the chat and copy and pasting something several times into the chat.
-The player spamming that he/she is selling something should be warned that what they are doing is wrong, then if they carry on they get muted for 10 minutes.

=> Is it forbidden? No, that should NEVER be forbidden.

-A more appropriate punishment should be warn, then if they do it again mute for 10 minutes.

*To what point is swearing allowed?
-Swearing should be allowed completely.

*Have players and mods the same set of rules? A discussion with Agent proved that they don’t.
-All rules that apply for players should apply for mods.

More questions!

-In Channel 1, all in-game chat rules will apply. In Channel 2 the only rules are: no spamming, no gigantic blocks of text and no large images.
-Yes, but the stricter the rules, the less fun there is.
-Yes, that’s why we need to loosen up the rules!

To everyone:
-Yes
-Not at all.

Finally:
-You were fine the way you were and shouldn’t have been demoted.
-The mods are fine as they currently are.

sorry if this is a little messy
